NFL Preview – Detroit Lions @ Green Bay Packers

It’s Week 10 of the 2015/2016 NFL regular season and my oh my, how quickly this has flown by. The road to the playoffs has well and truly begun and this season poses a plethora of playoff contenders, especially in the NFC. With teams all fighting for a highly sought-after playoff spot, this latter half of the season should boast some fantastic games. We’re being treated to another great battle in one of the early games as two NFC North teams face-off. Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers seek to get back to winning ways as they host the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field.

Although the Packers have fallen in their last two games, we expect them to take advantage of a broken down Lions team tonight and get the big victory. We’re taking the Green Bay Packers -10.5 at odds of 24/25 with 888 Sport. You can get ‘Treble the Odds’ with your first bet if you click this link or the banner below!

With the sheer dominance of the New England Patriots in the AFC, the NFC runners-up of last season, the Green Bay Packers, looked like the likely candidate to meet the Patriots in the Super Bowl this season following a 6-0 start. However after falling to the Denver Broncos and then the Carolina Panthers last week, questions have ascended about the worth of this team after struggling on both sides of the ball. They still sit firmly top of the NFC North and will win the division again this year, but they do need to find some wins again.

Aaron Rodgers, despite being held to only 77 passing yards against the Broncos two weeks ago, has firmly established himself as the best Quarterback in the NFL and perhaps ever with unreal numbers this season. Rodgers has completed 64.7% of his passes for 1,937 yards. He has tosses nineteen touchdowns and a mere three interceptions. The loss of Jordy Nelson presesaon was scary, but Randall Cobb, James Jones and Richard Rodgers have carried the load, combining for over 1,100 yards and 15 touchdowns. James Stark has shockingly taken over this team as the best rusher, running for 334 yards and one touchdown. Eddie Lacy is close behind with 308 yards and two touchdowns. The Green Bay defence has largely done their job, allowing on average only 20.9 points per game and 382.1 yards per game.

The Detroit Lions may be considered the most underachieving team in the NFL. With talent such as Matt Stafford, Calvin Johnson and Ameer Abdullah, it’s crazy to think this team sits bottom of the NFL with a single win. This season has largely proved that the Lions will need a BIG shake-up before the start of next season which could see some key names as the above no longer playing football in Michigan next season. Prior to their bye-week last week, the Lions played in the final London game of the season, taking on the Kansas City Chiefs. The Lions were embarrassed as the Chiefs inflicted a heavy 45-10 defeat on them.

Most of the questions of this football program will be surrounding Matt Stafford and determining if he is a franchise Quarterback which he has been highly touted as for years. The man under center has completed 64.5% of his passes for 2,083 yards this season. He has thirteen touchdowns and eleven interceptions. Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate have been Stafford’s targets this season, combining for over 1,000 yards and four touchdowns. Rookie rusher Ameer Abdullah is displaying some signs of greatness as he has added 225 yards and a touchdown on the ground for the Lions this season. This Lions defence has been simply terrible. They have allowed on average 30.6 points per game and 385.8 yards per game this season.

It’s obviously without question that the Green Bay Packers approach this tilt as the clear favourites and that has been reflected as they have been made the favourites by a touchdown, successful two point attempt and a field goal. The Packers are 5-1 against the spread in their last six games against NFC teams. They’re 4-9 against the spread against teams with a losing record. The Lions are 11-25-1 against the spread in November games, 1-6 against the spread versus teams with a winning record, 0-4 against the spread in the head-to-head between these teams when meeting in Wisconsin and 2-6 against the spread in the last four seasons.

I think the gulf in class in this fixture is far, far too obvious to ignore and I think that will show. I think Aaron Rodgers is one of the most composed Quarterbacks in the NFL and when facing a crisis, like this team is with injuries and consecutive losses, Aaron Rodgers is the man to tell everyone to calm down and follow the plan. I think this tilt suits him perfectly. Two losses, a home battle, fired-up to get the victory against the worst team in the league. Rodgers usually tears apart division rivals and I truly think that will be the case tonight. The Lions simply have no defence and not enough of an impact on the ground to balance this game out. I really like the Green Bay Packers to cover the -10.5 spread as they carry on their quest for a #1 or #2 seed in the NFC.
