NFL Preview – New York Jets @ New England Patriots

The halfway point of the NFL season is swiftly approaching next week and it’s in this point of the season, week seven, where teams begin upping their quality of play in order to challenge for a coveted playoff place. Because of this, games will start becoming really competitive and great to watch. What we have in this game is a civil battle between the top two teams in the highly competitive AFC East. The defending World Champions, the New England Patriots, host the surging New York Jets at Foxborough.

Despite how well the undefeated New England Patriots have been playing, injuries are raising concerns about how well this team keeps operating. We think the Jets who have one of the best defences in the league will keep this close and cover the +7.5 spread. You can take the New York Jets +7.5 at odds of 23/25 with 888 Sport. In the offseason, a lot was spoke about the competition in the AFC East following the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets and Miami Dolphins all adding great talent to their rosters. Many thought the New England Patriots would suffer from Super Bowl hangover, however that has been far from the case this season. They’ve gone 5-0 and firmly sit atop of the AFC East, amassing a huge 186 points in their five games. The problem is, the defence isn’t quite as scary as it was last season and their offensive line is taking so many injuries. It’s going to be interesting to see how they deal with the losses in personnel.

After escaping the clutches of the four game suspension imposed on him by the NFL, Tom Brady has come back with a vengeance and has been playing like a rebel without a cause. Brady has thus far thrown for 1,669 yards, fourteen touchdowns and one interception. Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman have been solidifying themselves as the best Wide Receiver and Tight End combination in the league, combining for 874 yards and nine touchdowns. Dion Lewis has also added as a dual threat, catching 26 passes and running for 201 yards on 40 runs, notching two touchdowns in the process. LeGarrette Blount has been the ground threat, running for 249 yards and four touchdowns. The Patriots defence are allowing 21 points per game and 356 yards per game on average. They’ve managed 19 sacks, six interceptions and five fumble recoveries.

The firing of Rex Ryan seemingly reinvented this New York Jets program who had been suffering from mediocrity for years. Todd Bowles stepped in as Head Coach and then made some huge signings like bringing one of the best Cornerbacks to ever play the game, Darrelle Revis, back to his first team in New York. They also added Antonio Cromartie to really scare down opposing Quarterbacks, whilst adding defensively in their draft to make one of the scariest defences in the league. They have translated this into results, going 4-1 whilst sitting second in the AFC East. A win would see them tied on record with the Patriots. They seek to remain undefeated on the road this season.

The Jets have entrusted veteran Quarterback out of Harvard, Ryan Fitzpatrick, under center this season. He has been okay for the Jets, completing 63% of his passes on average, throwing nine touchdowns and seven interceptions. Chris Ivory has really come into his own this season as a bell cow running back, adding 460 yards and four touchdowns. The Jets also made big offensive acquisitions, adding star Receiver, Brandon Marshall, who has four touchdowns on 37 catches. Statistically, the Jets have the best defence in the NFL, allowing an average of 15 points and 269 yards per game. The Jets defence has managed eight sacks and interceptions and seven fumble recoveries.

Vegas are happily piling the points on the clear favourites in the New England Patriots here, making them the touchdown, PAT and half a point favourites. Following a win, the Patriots are 5-1 against the spread. They are also 14-6 against the spread in their last 20 home games. In their last eight games, the New York Jets are 7-1 against the spread. They’re 7-0 against the spread versus AFC teams. In the head-to-head between these two teams, the underdog has covered the spread in the last four meetings.

There’s no shadow of a doubt when considering the best teams in the NFL that the New England Patriots always come atop of the conversation. That being said, last week they were expected to steam roll an under performing Indianapolis Colts team who have been playing awful this season, but that wasn’t the case as the Colts kept it incredibly competitive and lost by only seven points. It really shows that being forced down to their fourth string left tackle and making so many adjustments on an injury plagued offensive line and an only above average defence makes the world of difference. Top playmakers like Dion Lewis, LeGarrette Blount, Dont’a Hightower and Brandon LaFell are all qustionable for the game also. They take on the best defence in the NFL who have a secondary which really intimidated opposing Quarterbacks, supported by a front seven who are lethal on the pass rush against a depleted offensive line. Because of this very reason, I expect the New England Patriots to win comfortably, but I highly doubt it will be by a huge margin. I’m quite happy taking the Jets to cover the spread by more than a touchdown.
