MLB Preview – Pittsburgh Pirates @ St Louis Cardinals

We have a main event conclusion to a series in the Midwest this evening as the Pittsburgh Pirates make the trip to Missouri, hoping to stop the St Louis Cardinals winning the three game streak over them in this series. The Pirates are third overall in the MLB, and second both in the National Conference, and National Conference Central, second to their opponents tonight. The Cardinals top the league in dominant fashion.

We believe the Cardinals will win the game and they are currently 41/50 with 888 Sport. If you ‘Treble the Odds’ on a £10 bet it could return £54.30. Sign up by clicking here or the banner below.

The Pirates have finally capitalised on their stylish form this season which has been imminent for a few seasons now. This has been demonstrated in their last eight games with five victories. The victories were earned against the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, and a three game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Their bats have been good enough for their pitchers this season, with a sixteenth best in the league 465 runs scored. They’ve really demonstrated their firepower over the last eight games, hitting 39 runs. As mentioned, they’re hitting enough runs to get the wins they need which support their elite pitching rotation. The Pirates have elected Francisco Liriano to pitch tonight who has really showed some talent this season, owning a 3.13 ERA, 29th best in the league. Liriano allowed only three runs over five innings against the Twins in his last start. Liriano has only allowed more than three runs twice in his last ten starts.

The St. Louis Cardinals have been far and above the best team in the league this season with incredibly consistent play. This has been displayed in their six wins over the last eight games, earning a duo of wins over the Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, and the Pirates in this series. They’ve managed to score 31 times in the eight game stretch, reflective of their solid total of runs scored this season of 448, 20th best in the league. Like the Pirates, their talented group of pitchers has allowed this total to be enough scored for the Pitchers to get the wins. Lance Lynn gets the call to the mound for the Cardinals tonight. The Cardinals invested trust in Lynn is really paying dividends as Lynn owns a solid 2.76 ERA this season, 18th best in the league. Lynn played shutout Baseball against the Milwaukee Brewers in his last start, not allowing them a single run over six innings. Lynn has also only allowed more than three runs twice in his last ten starts.

My worry about Liriano is that after allowed a rather uninspiring three runs over five innings in his last full game, he then went out against the Dodgers for three innings and allowed seven hits and four runs before pulling out with a ‘twinge’ in his shoulder. This was only five days ago which has me worried about the seriousness of the injury and how he’ll fare against the best team in the league. The Pirates best pitcher Gerrit Cole couldn’t stop the Cardinals bats last night, so I can’t really invest my trust in a slightly injured and perhaps slightly underperforming Francisco Liriano to do it. St Louis Cardinals to win in a cagey affair.
