MLB Preview – Miami Marlins @ Atlanta Braves

Atlanta tonight hosts the final game of the four game series between the travelling Marlins of Miami, and the hometown team, the Atlanta Braves, who have gave their fans plenty to be happy about following three straight victories against the Marlins. The Marlins are currently dead last in the league, the National Conference, and the National Conference East. The Braves are 21st overall, tenth in the National Conference, and third in the National Conference East.

The Marlins have only managed to muster a bitterly disappointing one win in their last eight games, coming against the Padres seven games ago. Their problems are evident as the worst batting team in the league with 396 runs in 111 games, the only team with under 400 runs. Whilst the bats have been somewhat loaded in the last eight, the pitching has been terrible. They’ve scored 29 in the 8 games, yet still only managed that single win, which shows just how bad the pitching has been. Bryan Hand will be starting on the mound for the Marlins. With only three starts this season and under 50 innings pitched, his 4.71 ERA doesn’t look too advertising at all. He’s coming off a four inning close where he allowed 5 hits but no runs.

The Braves will be revelling as following the three wins, it’s taken their win/loss total in the last eight games to five and three. The wins came against the Marlins in the current series, and single wins against the Giants and Phillies. The home base has been crossed 43 times in the last eight which in unlike the Braves as they are only the 24th best batting team in the league with 420 runs. You can see their pitching isn’t a huge issue because when their bats are firing, they win. Shelby Miller gets the call to the mound for the Braves tonight who looks very likely to continuing his solid pitching season, currently boasting a 2.44 ERA, eleventh best in the league. Miller will be looking to build on a solid seven inning presence against the Giants where he allowed only two runs. He suffered an unexpected slump in form prior to the Giants game, but he still managed a 2.84 ERA over his last 15 starts.

Time is running out very swiftly for the Marlins to turn their season around, and it very much looks like a lost cause as they’ve significantly dropped in form in this latter half of the season. The Braves who experienced a bad start are now largely still within playoff contention in a competitive division. Their pitching hasn’t been the issue as aforementioned and this eight game stretch speaks volumes about them when their bats are firing. That being said, Shelby Miller, as good a pitcher as he is, has not had a win in his last five starts, but has also faced some top level opposition. He gets the privilege tonight of taking on the worst batting team in the league. As long as the Braves run support continues as it has been, Miller should render the Marlins run support useless. Miller and the Atlanta Braves to win.
