Champions League Preview

The Champions League is back, mid-week monotony has been told to do-one and some of the worlds finest football will grace our TV screens for the next three months. After missing out on yesterdays action, we have a double for our followers which covers both games. Read on to see the offer.

FC Schalke 04 vs Real Madrid

These two teams faced each other last year in the knockout stages, with FC Schalke being on the receiving end of a 9-2 aggregate annihilation as Real Madrid marched on to win the tournament. While nobody expects it to be a big a defeat as last time, Madrid are favourites to go through. Real Madrid may still be reeling from their loss against Atletico Madrid but they should have enough firepower to win this one. Another boost is the fact third choice keeper, 19 year old Timon Wellenreuther, will be starting in net for Schalke. Real Madrid are without Modric, Rodriguez, Ramos, Khediera and Coentrao, but the latter two have been substitutes for the past two seasons now. Coral have Real Madrid at 1.80 on the -1 handicap, and just 1.5 for the straight win.

Coral Bet

FC Basel vs FC Porto

This is a harder game to call for the bookies. FC Basel managed to hold Real Madrid to a 1-0 loss when on their home turf, despite losing in the other leg 5-1. They’re impressive home record in the Champions League was what got them through at the end of the day, including the 1-1 draw they held Liverpool to, who were throwing the kitchen sink at them as they needed a win. Basel have been conceding a few goals as of late in the league, and they are missing Fabian Schar, their starting centre back. Porto are the only team apart form Madrid to remain unbeaten in the UCL, but they progressed from a relatively easy group, where they drew twice with the only other decent team, Shaktar Donetsk. Jackson Martinez’s goal record is impressive, which will worry Basel, but I feel like Basel’s attacking potency and typically solid home performances should be enough to see them come out with a draw. Coral have FC Basel +1 Asian Handicap at 1.3 whereas the 0.0 handicap is 1.850.
