Lewis Hamilton Does the Business in Abu Dhabi

Lewis Hamilton Claims Second F1 Championship.

Lewis Hamilton claimed his second F1 Championship by winning the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in style. This championship victory promoted him to an elite of British F1 champions who now hold more than one title. Even the notorious James Hunt on which the film ‘Rush’ was based only won the title once. Hamilton will now be chasing the record held by Jackie Stewart who won 3 titles over four seasons in 1969, 1971 and 1973.

This year was a great testament to Lewis Hamilton’s ability. Hamilton had been patiently waiting for a car as good as this, and he knew this season was going to be a direct battle with Niko Rosberg his Mercedes teammate. The pair had a fractious relationship earlier in the year, and Hamilton was incensed when he felt that Rosberg deliberately went off the track in Monaco to scupper his chances of pole position.

Another major setback included the collision of the two teammates on the second lap of the Belgian Gran Prix. Rosberg’s car was repaired and he  managed to finish the race and claim second place, but the damage to Hamilton’s tyre set him back too far and he was retired by Mercedes with five laps remaining. This left him at another 20 point deficit, with all of these setbacks seemingly not being his fault, it would be easy to see Hamilton losing his optimism. However, he came back stronger and went on to win five more races, so much so that Rosberg’s victory in Brazil did little to turn the tide. Hamilton was out-qualified 12 times to 7 by Rosberg, but when it came down to the racing, Rosberg was no match for Hamilton. In the 12 races where both drivers started on the front row, Hamilton finished ahead 10 times. Hamilton won 11 races, Rosberg won 5. Lewis Hamilton was simply the better driver this year and he deserved his long awaited second F1 title.
