Borussia Dortmund vs Arsenal Preview

Arsenal came out with a draw in what was a tough game at the weekend against Manchester City. Despite spending £70 million in the transfer window and adding some extra firepower with Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck up front they travel to Germany with some defensive issues. Both Mathieu Debuchy and Nacho Monreal are injured and new signing Calum Chambers is also a doubt. Kieran Gibbs is likely to come in at the left back position.

Dortmund have started their domestic campaign well and Shinji Kagawa marked his return to the club with a goal in last weeks match against Freiburg. Dortmund are always a club that manages to sell some of their best players but replace them with other talented up and comers. This year, Robert Lewandowski left as a free agent to Bayern Munich and they have brought in Ciro Immobile to fill the large void left by his departure. Their will be pressure on the 21 year old to continue his rich scoring vein that led him to be Serie A top goalscorer last season with 22 goals.

Dortmund have an impressive home record in the Champions League and Arsenal will have to be at their best to turn over a team that that reached the final only two years ago. Arsenal will be hoping Danny Welbeck can repeat the two goal brace he managed for England just last week.

These two teams met in the group stages last year and both pinched a victory in the away legs in a group that saw 3 teams finish on the same points. Napoli were the losers in the head to head and goal difference and both Dortmund and Arsenal progressed to the knockout stages.

A Champions League trophy is something that has eluded Arsene Wenger in his career. Arsenal reached the final in 2006, but they succumbed to defeat when down to ten men against a rampant Barcelona team who also beat Manchester United twice in the finals in later years.

Both Klopp and Wenger will fancy their chances of progressing from a group that otherwise includes Galatasary and Anderlecht, but a win in the first game against the other group favourite could make all the difference in the end.
